Drivernating?

I'm not sure whether this is a large-state phenomenon or merely one characteristic of different people I've met here, but it seems like Californians are a lot less wary of driving long distances. A long weekend excursion to, say, Joshua Tree or Portland, Oregon are, in my new conception of driving radii, big but not insane, while at home I considered lunch in New Brunswick to be too far away. Hm.
